This is the kind of thing that is too easily overlooked:

“The White House assertions that the revelation of the program would be harmful we will set aside as tainted - of course the White House would say that, whether it is true or not. After all, it authorized the program.” http://decision08.net/

The assumption that ‘of course they would lie’ is in my opinion a factor that contributes the acceptance of that lying.
